Notes: Back in 1992 Jim Triggs and Terry Ryan of Gibson's Custom Shop were presenting a prototype of the Wes Montgomery L-5 at a show in Dallas to find out if such an instrument would be attractive to players. It was very well received and then Gibson has decided to come up with this guitar designated from its famous player - Wes Montgomery.

Materials: 17" wide body with handcarved bookmatched fine grained solid spruce top, highly figured solid five-piece tiger flamed maple neck with walnut center stripe, highly flamed solid maple back and sides, pointed-end ebony fretboard, nut width 1 11/16“, 20 frets, pearl single block position markers, flower pot peghead inlay, multi-ply white / black binding, bound f-holes, solid ebony bridge.

Hardware: Classic '57 Humbucker Pickup, tailpiece with model name engraved on insert, ABR-1 bridge, ebony base with pearl tie inlays, "Custom L-5" engraved truss rod cover, quintuple-bound pickguard, Schaller M6 tuners, with Certificate of Authenticity.

Facts: Made 2003 in Nashville in a beautiful, translucent wine red finish. The label is signed by James Hutchins, a long-time employee who has held the flickering torch in hard times of the company. He has been working for Gibson more than four decades and he was in charge for acquisition and wood selection during the last years until he retired. The Wes Montgomery Model should not strictly be regarded as a reissue from the mid-sixties but more as a modern version of the original L-5CES with one pickup. The idea of Wes to forgo of the bridge pickup has a tremendous benefit as several drillings into the top can be avoided and especially the area near the bridge is crucial for the transmission of the string vibration.

Condition: The guitar is in as new condition. Absolute collector's condition. The finish, hardware and everything else on this guitar is all original. The tuners work smooth and perfectly, no bent shafts. The entire binding is tight to the body.

Playability: Action is low and the neck profile is the comfty rounded C. The neck is buzz-free, straight and it plays very smooth without any effort.

Tone: The sound of this L-5 wine red can be compared with the expressions used to describe the taste of a great wine: Perfectly balanced with an absolutly clean tone, unmistakable character, very fine and expanded bouquet with notes of cherry, yet harmonic with an elegant finesse.

Case: Original hardshell case with red plush interior in as new condition. All latches and hinges work fine.

Setup: This instrument is strung with flatwound strings (.013-.054). The guitar will accommodate lighter gauge strings, according to your preference. The guitar is perfectly setup and ready to go ...

To Summarize: Scientists are claiming that red wine has life prolonging properties. Whether these properties do apply while playing this wine red L-5 Wes Montgomery probably nobody can tell for sure. As a matter-of-fact, one has to admit that an exquisite archtop can only get better in the course of time just as with a noble wine.
