Notes: The Super
400 guitar has always been the pinnacle of Gibson's guitar line, making
its debut back in 1934. In 1939, after several changes, the
first Super 400 with a cutaway design called Super 400 Premiere
was introduced. It offered access to the entire fretboard!
Top players like jazz wizard Kenny Burrell or picking pioneer
Merle Travis prefered the Super 400. It is still in high demand
by players and collectors alike for their clear open tone
and great response.
Materials: 18“ wide body with handcarved bookmatched
fine grained solid spruce top, highly figured solid three-piece
tiger flamed maple neck with ebony center stripe, solid maple
back and sides also highly flamed, pointed-end ebony fretboard,
nut width 1 11/16“, 20 original frets, pearl single and double
split-block position markers, split diamond peghead inlay,
7-ply body binding, 5-ply neck, head and pickguard binding,
triple bound f-holes, polished bone nut, solid Brazilian rosewood
bridge.
Hardware: Tailpiece with Y-shaped center section and
model name engraved on cross-piece, compensated Brazilian
Rosewood bridge, Rosewood base with pearl triangular inlays,
original Super 400 truss rod cover, quintuple-bound marbled
pickguard, Kluson sealfast tuners.
Facts: The FON number of this Super 400C is from 1953
and the S/N A-181XX on the white oval label dates it
to 1954. This is correct as the FON number was given at an
early stage of the production and the S/N towards the end
of the production process. It is one of just 17 sunburst made
in 1954.
Condition: Considering the age, the guitar has been
maintained in exceptional +++ condition with only light lacquer
checking and few marks here and there. No breaks. Even the
frets are original with plenty of life left. Due to the collector's
condition it can be assumed that this guitar only had one
previous owner. The finish and hardware is all original. The
tuners work smooth and they stay in tune perfectly, no bent
shafts, original buttons. The entire binding is original and
tight to the body.
Playability: Action is very low without buzz and the
neck profile is the classic rounded C. The neck is straight
as an arrow and the neck angle is excellent.
Tone: The voice has remarkable range, from smooth,
buttery lows to clear transparent highs with great projection.
Case: Correct vintage brown Lifton hardshell case in
fantastic time-capsule shape, arched top and back, all latches
and hinges work smooth, pink plush interior and unmolested
Lifton sticker.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge
bronze strings (.012-.054). The guitar will accommodate lighter
or heavier strings, according to your preference. The entire
guitar is inspected, fingerboard and bridge oiled, body and
neck cleaned and hand polished.
To Summarize: This is as close as it gets when it comes
to vintage instruments from Gibson's hey-days. An awesome
instrument of surpassing elegance, playability and versatility,
with the potential of being a great investment opportunity
which we are pleased to offer to one fortunate player.
