Starting in the 90ties until 2008,
D'Angelico New Yorker guitars have been built in Japan under
the guidance of master luthier Hidesato Shino. The company
is creating high-quality reproductions of the legendary D'Angelico
jazz guitars. The New Yorker Semi Solid was designed to meet
the needs not only of jazz guitarists, but also blues, R/B
and even rock players making it the company's most versatile
model. Viewed from the front, this guitar looks almost like
a full-sized New Yorker single-cutaway archtop, but it is
slightly smaller overall. It sports all the same fine appointments
lavished upon the ultra-upscale D'Angelico guitars, including
ornate mother-of-pearl inlays on the fretboard, headstock
front and backside, highly stylized gold hardware, Grover
Imperial tuners, exquisite binding on pretty much every surface
that can be bound. Strict attention to detail is evident everywhere.
Art Deco touches the pickguard, trussrod cover and the polished
brass stairstep tailpiece. From the gorgeous flamed maple
back and sides to the perfectly matched solid German spruce
top the selection of woods is also first rate. The body construction
features an internal solid-wood block as an aid to reduce
feedback. The NY Semi Solid's comfortable C-shaped neck
and large frets facilitate silky smooth playing in all positions.
The instrument's classic headstock actually provides
a nice counterweight to the heft of the body, which helps
the guitar balance nicely on the strap. The electronics are
first rate and the Volume and Tone controls perform smoothly.
To expand the variety of sounds towards endless skies the
Tone controls are push/pull type to allow splitting of each
pickup separately. To see how versatile this leaner and meaner
is, it has been tested with several different amps. The NY
Semi Solid produced a wide range of clean textures with woody
mids you'd expect to get from a full-sized jazz guitar
(neck pickup) to more aggressive, yet still rich and clear
highs (bridge pickup). Similar results were obtained with
all tested amps. The instrument dished up some truly tasteful,
yet nasty sounds, with lots of rich overtones and singing
sustain. Even more impressive for a jazz-styled guitar, the
NY Semi Solid delivered everything from an edgy treble crunch
to kick-ass power cords all without breaking into feedback
at relatively high volume.
Bottom Line: Despite its impressive jazz pedigree and undeniable
aptitude for clean sounds, the New Yorker Semi Solid is a
fine choice for anyone looking for a new take on blues or
rock tones. It's a particular cool option for players
who like to cover a wide variety of sounds without bringing
multiple guitars to a gig.

Während der letzten
20 Jahre wurden D'Angelico Gitarren in Japan unter der
Leitung von Hidesato Shino hergestellt. Die legendären
D'Angelico Jazz Gitarren werden mit höchster Qualität
reproduziert. Die New Yorker Semi Solid wurde nicht nur für
den Jazz Bereich entwickelt, sondern um auch Blues-, R/B und
Rock Gitarristen anzusprechen. Somit ist sie die vielseitigste
Gitarre von D'Angelico. Von vorne sieht die Gitarre beinahe
wie eine "normale" New Yorker aus, aber sie ist
etwas kleiner. Sie wurde mit allen Besonderheiten einer "grossen
D'Angelico" bestens ausgestattet z.B. reichverzierte
Perlmutteinlagen auf Griffbrett und Kopfplatte, goldene Metallteile,
Grover Imperial Mechaniken und edle Einfassungen. Dabei wurde
besondere Aufmerksamkeit auf Details gelegt. Das Schlagbrett,
die Abdeckung auf der Kopfplatte und die stufige Saitenaufhängung
aus poliertem Messing sind stil- und kunstvoll angebracht.
Die handgearbeitete Fichtendecke und das sehr schön geflammte
Ahorn für Zargen und Boden sind vom Allerfeinsten. Ein
Holzblock im Innern dient der Vermeidung von Rückkopplung.
Der Hals hat ein angenehmes C-Profil und die perfekt abgerichteten
Bünde vermitteln ein seidig-weiches Spielgefühl
in allen Lagen. Das Gegengewicht zum Korpus liefert die klassische
Kopfplatte und es ist sehr ausgewogen. Die Elektronik funktioniert
einwandfrei und die Regler arbeiten geräuschlos. Um die
Klangmöglichkeiten auszudehnen sind die Tonregler mit
Push/Pull Funktion ausgestattet, welche die Pickups einzeln
auf Single coil umschalten. Um die klangliche Vielfalt zu
erforschen, wurde die Gitarre mit mehreren Verstärkern
getestet. Die NY Semi Solid erzeugte ein breites Klangspektrum
mit klarer Struktur und hölzernen Mitten, die man eher
von einer Jazz Gitarre mit normaler Grösse erwarten würde
(Halstonabnehmer) bis hin zu bissig-höhenbetontem Klang
(Stegtonabnehmer). Ähnliche Ergebnisse wurden mit allen
getesten Verstärkern erzielt. Das Instrument liefert
wirklich geschmackvolle und dennoch schneidende Klangfaben
mit begeisternd lebendiger Tonentfaltung und reichlich Obertönen.
Für diese Jazz gestylte Gitarre ist auch erstaunlich,
dass man von einem leicht angezerrten bis hin zu einem gewaltigem
Metallbrett eine ganz andere Gangart beschreiten kann
Fazit: Trotz ihrer beeindruckenden Jazz Wurzeln und Eignung
für klare Sounds ist die New Yorker Semi Solid eine ausgezeichnete
Wahl für jeden, der sich im Bereich Blues oder Rock zuhause
fühlt und besonders geeignet für Gitarristen, die
mit nur einer Gitarre möglichst flexibel sein wollen.
